Since Spring has sprung in Seattle…I thought I would share with you some of my favorite lovelies! Plants of the Pacific Northwest Coast by Pojar and Mackinnon helped with the info, well “fun facts” (Go buy it if you need identification facts). Pics by me on the Wolf Tree Nature Trail, Discovery Park.
Fringecup Tellima grandiflora
Fringecup was said to be eaten by woodland elves to improve night vision
Throughout the Northwest Coast, the ripening of the salmonberries is associated with the song of Swainson’s thrush, called the “salmonberry bird” in many languages.
False Lily-of-the-Valley (heart shaped) Maianthemum dialatatum
(Pictured with Starry Solomon's seal )
The Makah chewed the long roots and swallowed the juice to reverse sterility.
False Solomon’s Seal Smiacina racemosa
The Gitksan boiled the roots and drank the tea as a strong medicine for rheumatism, sore back, kidney trouble, and as a purgative.
Now get out and enjoy Nature!
